Role of Head of Department
The HOD is responsible and accountable for establishing educational excellence at the school in the
subject department that they are leading, ensuring high-quality educational delivery maximizing student outcomes.
• Heads of Departments are expected to work together with the School educational leadership to
ensure high standards of teaching, learning practices and processes in their respective [subject]
departments
The duties and responsibilities of the Head of Department [Subject] shall include the following:
o Performing the duties of a Teacher and Head a Department for a particular subject or group
of subjects;
o Actively assisting the Head/Phase leaders of the School in ensuring the good professional
practice, standards, and quality of teaching and learning of subject/s through proper
dialogue with the class teachers and, promote a healthy process of reciprocal observation
of teaching practices through instructional coaching.
o May undertake tasks on the curriculum design and coordination of the curriculum
improvement, stimulating innovation, developing demonstrations of new strategies and
procedures and practices,
o Co-ordinating the teaching and learning of the subject/s for which one is responsible;-
Setting examination papers, co-ordinating marking schemes and moderating examinations
and assessment processes at one’s school
o Ensuring that the maintenance and upkeep of equipment related to the subject at school
is regularly carried out;
o Preparing specifications and budgets for the requirements of the subject-specific teaching
tools and equipment, including laboratory equipment
o Mentoring other teachers in the subject/level of their specialty- conducting and leading
regular departmental meetings and ensuring the keeping of minutes;
o Creating and monitoring the subject-specific improvement plan in line with the School
Action plan and the SDP targets.
o Checking of lesson plans, assessment techniques, thinking routines used, projects,
rubrics, notebook work, and formative comments.
o Analyzing appropriate data to track student attainment and progress in internal and
external assessments.
o Follow up with an action plan based on error analysis and SIP needs
Educational Qualifications and Experience:
• Master’s degree or higher subject qualifications with suitable qualification in Education.
• Minimum 3 – 5 years of HOD/ senior school teaching experience in an Indian curriculum school,
preferably in Dubai or in India.
